At least 27 people were killed in two mass shootings in South African townships on Saturday night and early Sunday, police said. The attacks, hours apart, are the latest in a wave of gun violence gripping the country.

Eight gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols stormed a tavern in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Seventeen people were killed and 15 wounded, according to the South African Police Service. The attackers also torched two vehicles before fleeing.

About four hours later, gunmen opened fire at an entertainment venue in Lwandle township near Cape Town, killing 10 people and injuring 11. Police said no arrests had been made in either attack and the motives remained unknown.

The shootings came five days after a house-party attack near Durban killed 11 people, including a pregnant woman. President Cyril Ramaphosa said, according to Reuters, that “this cannot go on like this.” With municipal elections due in November, the violence has become a national concern.
