The death toll in the building collapse in Delhi’s New Seemapuri has risen to five, officials said, as rescue operations continued at the site near Idgah Machhli Mandi. Two more bodies were recovered from the debris this week.

The four-storey building collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, burying parts of adjoining structures in the densely populated area. Eleven people were rescued, while eight injured were shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital in Tahirpur.

Among the dead are a 12-year-old girl, 21-year-old Gulafsa — who was around four months pregnant — and a child of about one-and-a-half years. Their identities are being established.

Officials are probing the cause. Neighbours have pointed to nearby demolition work that caused vibrations, and to cracks that appeared in the structure after a recent earthquake. Teams from the NDRF, Delhi Police, fire service and the municipal corporation are at the site.
