MEA warns Indians against joining Russian armed forces

The Ministry of External Affairs has warned Indians against joining the Russian armed forces. The advisory was issued on September 30. It calls the path dangerous and strongly discouraged.
The ministry said it keeps receiving reports of Indians being recruited into the Russian military during the Ukraine conflict. It urged citizens to be cautious about job offers from unverified individuals and agents.
The MEA said some people willingly seek such offers for money, hoping to secure release later through the Indian government. It said this is a dangerous path. It also flagged cases of people giving up Indian citizenship for a Russian passport to join the forces.
The ministry said foreign nationals are being recruited by non-public entities, including voluntary groups. It advised due diligence before accepting offers from agents not registered with the MEA. India remains engaged with Russia for the safety and early discharge of Indians in its forces.
