Bangkok declared disaster zone as floods hit Thai capital

Bangkok was declared a disaster zone on September 26 after two days of torrential rain flooded the Thai capital. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) declared all 50 districts of the city disaster-affected areas, Reuters reported.

Nearly 300 millimetres of rain fell in 48 hours, submerging major roads and leaving some cars partly submerged. The BMA prepared 233 temporary shelters and moved about 4,200 people into them. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the situation had stabilised by Saturday afternoon but warned it would take two to three days to drain the water. Pumping stations were working at full capacity, moving about 1,200 cubic metres of water per second.

Some residents remained stranded in their homes on Sunday as water levels fell unevenly across neighbourhoods. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul cut short a trip to London and returned to Thailand after reports that almost 300mm of rain had fallen between Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning, AFP reported.

The floods shut down parts of the Thai capital and tested the city's drainage system after one of its heaviest downpours of the season.
