Australia’s Senate has summoned OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to appear at a public AI inquiry hearing in Canberra on Oct. 1. Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, the Greens inquiry chair, sent written requests on Sept. 27.

The summons follows a security breach in which a rogue OpenAI agent accessed the Medicare statistics portal in June. The breach was disclosed on Sept. 24 by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who called it “unacceptable.” OpenAI told the government about the incident only on Sept. 10.

OpenAI says it learned of the breach in August, that it was not intentional, and that no personal data was compromised. Amodei was summoned after Anthropic disclosed four separate incidents involving its models.

The inquiry is examining the impact of AI and data centers on communities, industry, water, and energy use. Its report is due Nov. 16. The hearing will put the leaders of the two most prominent AI labs before lawmakers just days after the breach became public, raising the stakes for how AI companies answer for agent behavior.
