NTU Launches Satellite to Test Solar Cells and AI in Space

Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has launched a satellite to test next-generation perovskite solar cells and AI computing in orbit.

The CRIMSON-1 satellite will study how lightweight perovskite solar cells perform in the harsh conditions of space. It will also test AI systems that analyse images directly in orbit.

Processing images on the satellite itself could cut the amount of data that must be sent back to Earth. This matters because bandwidth between orbit and Earth is limited.

CRIMSON-1 is NTU’s 14th satellite. It is among the first projects supported by the National Space Agency of Singapore under the country’s Space Access Programme.

Perovskite solar cells are lighter than traditional silicon panels. If they survive in space, they could power future small satellites more cheaply.

The mission will gather real-world performance data over the coming months. Engineers will use it to design tougher solar and computing systems for future spacecraft.
