Christa Pike on ventilator after failed Tennessee execution

Nashville, Oct 3 — Christa Pike remained unconscious on a ventilator after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her by lethal injection, her lawyers said Friday.
Hospital staff are working to clear the drug pentobarbital from her system. She received two doses at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.
Her lawyers said blown IV lines let the drug seep into tissue, leaving both her arms “swollen, burned and blistered.” Witnesses heard her “crying, whimpering and breathing loudly” during the procedure.
Her doctors had warned that small veins and a blood disorder, thrombocytosis, would make placing IV lines difficult.
Her team filed an emergency motion to preserve evidence from the attempt. Governor Bill Lee ordered a review of execution procedures and indefinitely postponed her execution. Republican leaders are debating whether to drop single-drug lethal injections. Tennessee was set to execute a woman for the first time in 200 years. The case has renewed debate over single-drug lethal injection protocols.
