Cornell students plan Oct 5 protest over frat rape case

Ithaca, Oct 3 — Cornell students plan a “Justice for Survivors” protest on October 5 over the university’s handling of an alleged 2024 gang rape at a Chi Phi fraternity house.
A former student identified as Jane Doe filed a lawsuit in September, alleging seven fraternity members drugged and raped her on October 19-20, 2024. The Tompkins County district attorney has reopened the criminal investigation.
Organizers want Cornell to expel alleged perpetrators, launch an external investigation and mandate prevention training for campus police.
Cornell says a hearing panel issued sanctions including expulsions and suspensions. After Governor Kathy Hochul called for an independent review, Cornell agreed to one.
The Chi Phi chapter was closed in 2024 and remains barred from campus. University officials say no student was offered writing essays as a sole consequence. The university says it supported presenting the case to a grand jury. A campus survey found 35 per cent of undergraduate women reported nonconsensual contact.
