IMD orange alert for three Kerala districts

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in three Kerala districts. Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki are expected to receive very heavy rain between October 1 and 3.

The IMD has warned of gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kilometres per hour in the affected areas. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and district administrations have been asked to stay prepared for waterlogging and possible landslips in hilly regions.

The alert comes as the northeast monsoon approaches, a season that typically brings Kerala its second spell of significant rainfall. Emergency control rooms in the three districts have been activated.

Residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas have been asked to remain alert and follow official advisories. The IMD said rainfall intensity is expected to reduce after October 3. Schools in the worst-hit areas may remain closed if conditions worsen. The state disaster management authority said relief teams are on standby.
