13-year-old para-swimmer conquers Palk Strait twice

Ishaan S, a 13-year-old para-swimmer from Chennai, has become the first and youngest S14 national para-swimmer to complete a two-way crossing of the Palk Strait.

He covered 64 kilometres in 18 hours and 50 minutes, finishing the remarkable feat on September 30. Ishaan has been diagnosed with intellectual disability, autism and ADHD.

The two-way crossing is considered one of the toughest open-water challenges in the region, testing endurance, navigation and mental strength across changing currents.

His coaches credited years of disciplined training and his family’s support. The achievement has drawn praise from the para-sports community and officials.

Ishaan’s swim is expected to inspire young athletes with disabilities across the country. Para-swimming in India has been gaining visibility, with more structured training programmes emerging.

The young swimmer’s next goals are yet to be announced, but his team says he will continue training for national and international competitions. Sports officials said his achievement would be recognised at the state level.
