Pune Heat Brings Rise in Dengue, Viral Fever

Pune is facing above-normal heat this October, and doctors report a rise in seasonal illnesses. Dr S. D. Sanap of the India Meteorological Department in Pune said clear skies and high humidity are pushing temperatures up. Maximum temperatures in October are likely to stay 1 to 2 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average. Doctors have reported more cases of dengue, chikungunya and viral fever amid the changing weather. The Pune Municipal Corporation said 266 confirmed dengue cases and 243 chikungunya cases were recorded, mostly in August and September. Over 2,000 mosquito breeding sites have been found across the city. Health experts advised senior citizens, children and people with diabetes or high blood pressure to take extra care. Residents should drink enough clean water, avoid long exposure to direct sunlight, and use masks and scarves outdoors. Doctors asked people to seek medical help if symptoms such as fever and body ache persist. The civic body has issued notices to 2,231 properties and collected fines of 4.46 lakh rupees where mosquito breeding prevention was found inadequate.
