New Barapullah Flyover Sees 3-km Jams on Day 2

Delhi’s new Barapullah Phase-III flyover has run into long traffic jams within two days of opening. Commuters reported tailbacks of 3 to 3.5 kilometres on the stretch linking Mayur Vihar Phase-I with Sarai Kale Khan and AIIMS. The corridor was inaugurated on September 29 by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. It was among four road projects worth 1,941 crore rupees. The flyover was billed as a link that would cut travel time between Mayur Vihar Phase-I and south Delhi by 20 to 25 minutes. Instead, some commuters said they took 40 to 55 minutes for short stretches. An aerial survey by the Delhi Traffic Police found the problem. Two three-lane traffic streams converge into a single three-lane corridor. Near Sundial Park, a lane also ends abruptly at almost a 90-degree angle. Officials said seven to eight lanes of traffic are merging into two lanes at one point. Police have asked the public works department to add barricades for a gradual merge. They are also working with Google so maps factor in the congestion.
