Gill’s 223* Powers India’s Record 406 Chase vs West Indies

Shubman Gill smashed the fastest double century in ODI history as India chased down 406 against the West Indies in Guwahati on Wednesday.
The India captain stayed unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls, reaching his double hundred in just 117 deliveries. He broke Ishan Kishan’s record of 126 balls and hit 26 fours and eight sixes.
Gill’s knock is the highest individual score in any ODI chase and the highest by a captain in the format. He battled cramps and neck pain through the innings.
Rohit Sharma supported him with 101 off 75 balls in a 255-run opening stand.
India finished on 406 for two in 43.3 overs, winning by eight wickets. It is only the second 400-plus chase in men’s ODI history after South Africa’s 438 against Australia in 2006.
The West Indies had posted 405 for seven, their highest ODI total, on the back of centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo.
Why it matters: the win seals a 2-0 series lead and cements Gill as the defining ODI batter of his generation.
