Compound archery will make its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028, after the International Olympic Committee added a compound mixed-team event to the Games programme in April 2025.

It is the first new bowstyle in Olympic archery since the sport returned to the Games in 1972. The LA28 archery programme will feature six medal events, with 12 mixed teams contesting the new compound event.

The competition schedule runs from July 19 to 30, 2028, at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The compound mixed-team final on July 21 will be the first archery medal decided at the Games.

The inclusion is a major boost for India, which is a compound archery powerhouse. Indian archers such as Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Ojas Deotale, Aditi Swami and Abhishek Verma have dominated world and Asian competitions, including five golds at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.

At the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, India swept all three compound team golds, underlining its status as a favourite for the new Olympic event. The quota secured in the mixed team event puts India on the road to LA28.
