16 heroes honoured with Carnegie Medal, including B.C. rescuer
Sixteen people across North America have been awarded the Carnegie Medal for heroism, the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission announced. The medal honours civilians who risk their own lives to save others.
Among the recipients is 24-year-old Matthew Robert Clark. He rescued an injured hang-glider pilot in British Columbia without any climbing gear, pulling off a rescue that officials called extraordinary.
The announcement is the third round of Carnegie Medal awards for 2026. The medals recognise acts of heroism that go beyond what duty or instinct alone would demand.
The Hero Fund was set up more than a century ago by Andrew Carnegie. It has honoured thousands of civilians who stepped forward in moments of danger.
The fund was created by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie in 1904. It also gives financial help to the families of heroes who lose their lives during rescues. Anyone can nominate a person for the medal by writing to the commission.
