Two young men died after inhaling suspected toxic chemical fumes inside a public toilet in Goregaon, Mumbai, in a tragedy reported on Tuesday.

Police suspect fumes from a nearby electroplating unit seeped into the facility. The unit’s owner has been detained, reports said, as investigators probe how the chemicals spread.

The victims, both in their twenties, were found unconscious and declared dead. Their deaths have raised questions about industrial units operating close to residential and public areas.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board is part of the investigation, with officials examining whether the unit had the required clearances. Police are awaiting forensic reports to confirm the exact gas.

Locals alleged the unit had been running without proper safeguards. Authorities said strict action will follow if violations are found, and the probe is continuing. Civic activists demanded a survey of industrial units operating near residential zones, calling the deaths a wake-up call for enforcement agencies.
