Three hikers lost in California’s Big Sur wilderness were rescued by a US Navy helicopter after an overnight search through dense terrain. The hikers were stranded in Limekiln State Park and were located at around 12:30 in the morning, with one of them suffering a medical emergency.

Seven rescuers had to cut their way through overgrown trails using machetes and chainsaws to reach the group. A Navy MH-60S Seahawk helicopter, call sign Lasso 3, then hoisted all three hikers out of the remote area.

The dramatic rescue was reported on 28 September 2026 and drew praise for the coordination between ground teams and the naval aircrew. Big Sur’s rugged coastline and steep canyons make it a popular but challenging destination for hikers, and rescues are not uncommon when visitors wander off marked trails. Officials reminded hikers to carry adequate supplies, stay on designated paths and inform others of their plans before heading into the backcountry.
