Jürgen Klopp’s start as Germany coach has gone from bad to worse, with a 1-0 home defeat to Greece leaving him winless after his first two games.

Greece substitute Dimitrios Kourbelis scored with a deflected shot in the 74th minute at the WWK Arena in Augsburg on Sunday. It was Germany’s first-ever loss to Greece, the 2004 European champions.

Klopp, 59, was held to a 1-1 draw by the Netherlands in his opening game after a 92nd-minute leveller from Cody Gakpo. The defeat leaves Germany third in Nations League Group A2 with one point.

Klopp took the blame. ‘With all the changes I made, the defeat is of course on me,’ he said. ‘It’s obvious that we were not going to win this game by a big margin against such a deep-sitting opponent, but we shouldn’t lose games like this one either.’

He asked for patience. ‘Football needs training, football needs routines. We don’t have enough of that yet.’ Germany face Serbia on Thursday in Munich. Why it matters: it is the worst start by a Germany coach in more than 60 years.
