Iran says it is still awaiting a definitive United States response, even after President Donald Trump publicly rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear talks.

Trump told reporters on September 26, “I rejected their deal,” after Tehran conveyed the plan through Qatari mediators at the United Nations General Assembly. The proposal reportedly offered to reopen Hormuz within seven days in exchange for lifting the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, waivers on oil sanctions, the release of frozen assets and a regional ceasefire.

Iranian officials insisted they remain open to a diplomatic solution and said no formal rejection had arrived through official channels. Mediators are still working with both sides on a possible deal, according to the reporting.

The standoff matters because the Strait of Hormuz carries a large share of the world’s seaborne oil, and shipping through it has been disrupted since the US-Israeli war with Iran began in late February.
