Donald Trump’s Board of Peace has unveiled a $2.45 billion first-phase plan to begin rebuilding Gaza, a 66-program package meant to be delivered in six months.

The plan, laid out at an event during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, would rehabilitate infrastructure and the economy of the enclave destroyed by two years of Israeli military assault. The final tab for full reconstruction is estimated at $71 billion.

It includes funding for humanitarian shelters to replace tents, debris removal, hospital rehabilitation, construction of desalination plants for water, and training a civilian police force.

‘We’re just refining, sharpening the axe, getting ready for when we get to the time to cut the tree,’ said Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, who devised the plan. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it gives people hope: ‘Here’s the future that awaits you if everyone does their part.’

The officials acknowledged the plan faces an uncertain future, with Israel and Hamas still at odds over the US-backed ceasefire, including disarmament and troop withdrawal. Why it matters: it is the first detailed price tag on rebuilding Gaza.
