At least two people were killed and 28 injured, including nine children, in overnight Russian strikes on Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday.

‘Russia has been attacking our regions throughout the night and into the morning,’ Zelenskyy said in a post on X. Two people died in the Kyiv region, one of them a citizen of Azerbaijan.

A high-rise apartment building in Kharkiv was hit, with the second and fourth floors partly destroyed. Twenty-eight people were injured there.

Zelenskyy said Kyiv also suffered drone damage to residential buildings, communications infrastructure and gas stations. ‘They wrecked an ordinary cafe and tried to burn down a food market in the capital,’ he said.

A vessel flying the Palau flag was struck in the Odesa region, while an ice cream factory was damaged in the Zhytomyr region. Residential buildings were hit in Sumy, Rivne, Kharkiv and Odesa.

Critical infrastructure was attacked in the Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia regions, he said.

Why it matters: the strikes hit civilian targets across at least 13 regions, underscoring how little progress diplomacy has made in slowing the air war.
