Russia’s hybrid attacks across Europe are aimed at breaking the will of Ukraine’s allies to keep supporting Kyiv, NATO’s top commander told EU lawmakers on Monday.

‘If there is a hybrid attack on your country, reinforcing the will to support Ukraine will show the Russians that their strategy isn’t working,’ said US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

He urged member states to make public who is behind such attacks when they are confident about the attribution, to deter what he called ‘sponsor states’.

Grynkewich cited a string of recent incidents, including an attempted drone attack on Germany’s Leipzig/Halle airport, which Berlin attributed to Russia’s GRU military intelligence service. He also mentioned a Russian ship firing flares at a Danish military helicopter and a drone crash near Wunstorf air base.

NATO is stepping up intelligence sharing after Denmark’s intelligence service warned that Russia could intensify hybrid warfare in the coming months.

Grynkewich said a limited Russian attack on NATO territory was ‘unlikely but something that we can’t rule out’.
