US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he expects more talks with Iran this week, a day after he rejected Tehran’s seven-day proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the fighting.

‘I expect more talks with Iran (this week),’ Trump told Axios in a phone interview. He added: ‘They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make… They overplayed their hand.’

Asked whether he was considering resuming military strikes on Iran, Trump said: ‘I am always thinking about it.’

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said mediators had not yet conveyed an official US rejection and that Tehran would wait for their response before deciding its next move. He described Trump’s remarks as a first reaction.

Iranian state media reported on Monday that Tehran had no new talks with US officials scheduled during its UN delegation’s stay in New York.

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held indirect talks with Araghchi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last Tuesday, with Qatari officials carrying messages between the sides.

Why it matters: both sides are refusing the other’s terms in public while keeping the diplomatic channel open in private.
