Rolls-Royce Locks In Safety Hardware for 470 MW SMR Fleet
Rolls-Royce SMR has chosen Czech firm Skoda JS as the sole supplier of control rod drive mechanisms for its 470 MW small modular reactor fleet. The deal locks in critical safety hardware as competition for nuclear manufacturing capacity grows.
The mechanisms adjust a reactor's power output during normal operation and drive control rods into the core to shut it down fast in an emergency, according to reports. Skoda JS will first build a prototype for the British design, then prepare its plants for serial manufacturing.
Skoda JS expects orders worth more than one billion Czech crowns for each power station built, its leadership said. The company is part of the Czech majority state-owned CEZ Group, which also holds a 20 percent stake in Rolls-Royce SMR.
The first 470 MW unit is planned for North Wales, with the first Czech unit at Temelin expected in the second half of the 2030s. Securing tier-one suppliers now keeps the factory-built reactor program on track to power future grids.
