Hurricane Nolo moved west away from Hawaii on Sunday after nearly stalling on Saturday, but the danger is not over. The storm is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane as it crosses warmer waters south of the island chain, forecasters said.

Heavy rain continues to batter the islands. More than 12 inches of rain has already been reported on the Big Island, according to IB Times. Big Island totals could reach about 20 inches, with another 1 to 4 inches possible. Maui could see another 2 inches, taking its totals to about 8 inches. The National Hurricane Center warned of continued life-threatening flash flooding and mudslide risk.

Tropical storm and hurricane watches and warnings were discontinued on Sunday. However, high wind warnings remain in place for parts of the Big Island and Maui County, with gusts of up to 75 mph, officials said.

Residents are being urged to stay alert as conditions remain dangerous. The storm’s earlier slow movement made flooding worse, and more rain is possible before Nolo moves safely out to sea.
