The United States has rejected a peace proposal from Iran. UN Ambassador Mike Waltz said on Sunday that Tehran’s negotiators “were asking for everything up front” and were not negotiating in good faith. He spoke on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday that he had turned down the proposal, which Iran floated at the recent UN General Assembly in New York. “The bottom line is they were asking for everything up front with a promise that they would then talk,” Waltz said. He added that Trump was “not confident” Tehran would “truly negotiate the end of their nuclear program.”

Waltz said Iran sought relief “from billions and billions of sanctions,” including US sanctions under Operation Economic Fury and UN snapback sanctions, tied to reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He also cited a failed 14-point US-Iran framework signed in Pakistan in June, which he said Iran broke by attacking international shipping.

Iran says only diplomacy can resolve the seven-month conflict. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on social media that reopening the strait depends on Tehran’s conditions being met. The rejected proposal would have triggered a seven-day countdown to reopening the waterway, he said.
