Don Johnson, 81, has been delivering lost airport luggage on grueling 14-hour shifts to pay for his wife Josephine’s cancer treatment. Now, strangers have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to let him stop.

Johnson, of The Colony, Texas, was caught on a doorbell camera slowly carrying heavy bags up a steep flight of stairs. Neighbor Erin Howell saw the footage and was heartbroken. “The reality is that he isn’t working by choice; he is working for survival,” she wrote.

Johnson tried Amazon, Walmart and “other places” after Josephine’s diagnosis three years ago, but no one would hire him. He works as an independent contractor with no benefits, driving hundreds of miles a day. His car has more than 200,000 miles on it.

Howell launched a GoFundMe campaign, “Help Don Retire,” on Sept. 2. Donations surged past $700,000 this week.

“It seems unreal. It seems to be a miracle,” Johnson said. The couple, married 57 years, says he will finally be able to stop working and stay home with Josephine as she continues her cancer battle.
