YouTube, Meta Reverse Ban on ‘Musk’ Trailer Ads

YouTube and Meta have reversed course and will allow paid ads for the trailer of “Musk,” Alex Gibney’s documentary about Elon Musk.

The Hollywood Reporter reported Friday that TikTok, Meta, YouTube and X had all refused to run the ads. By Saturday, Meta told TechCrunch the rejection was “an error and the ads are being restored.”

YouTube said the trailer had always been available on the platform but was “temporarily restricted” when submitted as an ad. “Following review, the ad has been cleared to run,” the company said.

The rejections were tied to political-content rules. The trailer includes footage from a 2024 political rally and references the 2024 election, though the distributor argued a documentary trailer is not campaign advertising.

X, which Musk owns, remains a holdout. Musk recently posted that “dogshit is worth more respect than Gibney.” TikTok, which bans all political advertising, has not reversed its decision.

Bleecker Street, the film’s U.S. distributor, had appealed the rejections. The nearly four-hour film premiered at the Venice festival, holds a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, and opens in U.S. theaters on October 9.
