Meta disabled the Facebook page of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and restricted his campaign’s ad account days before the country’s general election.

The company gave no explanation, according to Lula’s Workers’ Party. The page was restored hours later, but the ad account restriction blocked new campaign advertising on Facebook and Instagram.

Lula’s campaign filed a formal complaint demanding the account’s immediate restoration and a human review by Meta’s legal and compliance teams. Lawyers called the move a risk to a “level playing field” in the election.

The first round of voting is scheduled for October 4, with a runoff on October 25 if no candidate wins more than half the vote. Recent polls show a tight race between Lula and right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro.

The episode follows tests by Amnesty International and the Eko Movement that found Meta approved most AI-generated political disinformation ads about Brazil’s elections submitted as experiments.

Meta has not publicly explained the restriction.
