The US Army Reserve is checking whether it can supply police, medical and support units to the military’s Southern Command within the next four months, according to an internal Army message reviewed by CBS News.

The message does not mention Cuba directly. But multiple US officials told CBS News the planning is aimed at the island nation. There is no sign that any units have received deployment orders.

The Army Reserve is asking subordinate commands about six types of units that could fall under Southern Command. They would possibly be needed in 90 to 120 days, the message says. Commands were told to respond by September 25.

The requested units include a military police brigade, a medical brigade, and logistics and engineering battalions. Southern Command covers Central and South America and the Caribbean.

The planning comes as the Trump administration increases economic pressure on Cuba. President Donald Trump told the UN General Assembly this week that Washington seeks a ‘fundamental change’ in Cuba.

Havana has accused Washington of preparing military aggression. Earlier this year, CBS News reported that Pentagon planners had considered options including an Army-led air assault. Officials stressed no decision to launch an operation has been made.
