Supreme Court Lets Trump Use Expanded Voter Database

The US Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Trump administration to resume using an expanded federal database to help states check voters’ citizenship status.

In a 6-3 decision, the justices lifted a lower-court order that had blocked the expanded Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, or SAVE, program. The court’s three liberal justices dissented.

The administration reworked SAVE to add Social Security Administration records, allow searches by Social Security number, and permit bulk queries of voter lists. Critics say the data is error-prone and could wrongly flag eligible voters, including newly naturalized citizens.

The majority said the challengers’ claims likely lack merit. It noted that federal immigration law authorizes the Department of Homeland Security to request citizenship information from other agencies.

The ruling does not end the legal fight. It only allows the program to operate while litigation continues.

The practical effect may be limited. States join SAVE voluntarily. Federal law also bars systematic voter-roll purges within 90 days of an election, and the November midterms are weeks away.

Voting-rights groups called the decision deeply disappointing. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund said the flawed system risks disenfranchising eligible voters.
