Qatar has spent nearly two weeks working on proposals to revive suspended peace talks between the United States and Iran, its Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

Majed Al-Ansari told Bloomberg in an interview on September 21 that Qatari mediators were coordinating with Tehran and Washington to assess whether talks could restart. Qatari mediators have been traveling between several capitals, and he said US officials had assured Doha they were serious about an agreement.

He also called for regional security arrangements and an international settlement to protect the Strait of Hormuz, warning against any state using the waterway as a weapon.

The shuttle diplomacy continued even as Iranian and US officials held their first known indirect talks in months this week in New York, with Iran’s foreign minister and US envoys communicating through mediators.

Iran conveyed conditions including an end to the war on all fronts, a halt to US “acts of aggression,” and the release of frozen Iranian assets.

Trump said on September 26 that Tehran’s Hormuz proposal was unacceptable, while Iran said it was still waiting for a formal response through diplomatic channels.
