Andreeva beats Alexandrova to reach Beijing semifinals

Mirra Andreeva defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6(4), 7-6(3) in one hour and 53 minutes on Wednesday to reach the semifinals of the China Open in Beijing.
It was the 19-year-old’s first win in three meetings against her fellow Russian. Andreeva is the youngest Beijing semifinalist since Agnes Szavay in 2007.
The win also took her to a fourth career WTA 1000 semifinal, making her the youngest player to reach four such semifinals at 19 years and 154 days, breaking Coco Gauff’s record.
Andreeva held her nerve in both tie-breaks, striking cleanly from the baseline throughout the contest. She will next face Sara Bartunkova, who upset Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-0.
The teenager has been one of the breakthrough stars of the season and will look to reach her biggest final yet.
Andreeva has now beaten three seeded players in Beijing and is yet to drop a set in the tournament’s later rounds. A title here would be the biggest of her young career and could lift her into the world’s top five.
