287 Candidates Were in the Running for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was chosen from 287 candidates, made up of 208 individuals and 79 organisations, fewer than the 338 submitted last year.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the winner in Oslo at 11 am CEST on Friday. The committee does not reveal the names of nominees, and the official list remains confidential for 50 years under Nobel rules.
Nominations can be made by a select group of people and organisations, including heads of state, university professors, directors of foreign policy institutes, past Nobel laureates and committee members. Because the list is secret, publicly claimed nominations cannot be independently verified.
The winner receives a medal, a diploma and 12 million Swedish kronor in prize money, raised by one million kronor this year. If the prize were awarded jointly, the money would be shared.
The formal award ceremony takes place in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. This year marks the 125th anniversary of the peace prize.
