Illinois neighbours honoured for saving woman from sinking car

Three community members in Champaign, Illinois, were honoured for saving a 90-year-old woman from a submerged car. The rescue happened during a storm in August.
The woman lost control of her car and plunged into a flooded retention pond on North Prospect Avenue. The car sank up to its roof.
Ben Busboom-Miller swam out and broke the car’s window with a rock. He pulled the woman through the back window. Two store workers, Jennifer Harmon and Noel Garcia, helped guide him.
Four police officers also joined the rescue. On September 29, the three rescuers received Community Lifesaving Awards. The officers got the Chief’s Challenge Coin.
The woman attended the ceremony and thanked her rescuers. Her son, a US Coast Guard officer, praised their quick and heroic actions. The rescue happened on August 11 during a heavy downpour. Busboom-Miller suffered cuts on his body and needed stitches on his fingers. He said he would do it again without a second thought.
