India pushes balanced climate action at Pre-COP31

India has urged balanced climate action at the Pre-COP31 gathering and offered its coastal-monitoring expertise to Pacific partners, according to national headlines for October 7. The Pacific Pre-COP, hosted by Fiji and Tuvalu, brings leaders together ahead of COP31 in Antalya, Turkiye, from November 9 to 20. Pacific nations are pressing to hold the 1.5C target, secure climate finance and address rapid sea-level rise threatening coastal communities. Representatives of 30 nations recently visited Tuvalu's land-reclamation project as rising seas threaten the island country. Australia's climate minister Chris Bowen, who met Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi last month, said the visit reflected the importance Canberra attaches to India in the COP31 process. India has set a target of 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity by 2030. Bowen stressed converting climate commitments into measurable outcomes on mitigation and finance. India has positioned adaptation, from coastal protection to climate-resilient infrastructure, as central to its climate stance, alongside its Lifestyle for Environment mass movement.
