World Cerebral Palsy Day 2026: seeing the person, not the condition

On October 6, people in more than 75 countries are marking World Cerebral Palsy Day. The day celebrates the achievements of people living with cerebral palsy and pushes for a world that works better for everyone.

Around 50 million people worldwide live with cerebral palsy. In the UK, it affects about one in every 400 children, making it the most common physical disability in childhood.

Cerebral palsy covers lifelong conditions that affect movement, posture and coordination. It is caused by damage to the developing brain before, during or shortly after birth. The most common type, spastic CP, causes stiff or tight muscles.

This year’s message is simple: see the person, not the condition. Behind every statistic is an individual with their own personality, ambitions and story. The day is a chance to listen to what people with CP and their families need.

Advocates say real progress means better access to therapy, education and employment, not just awareness. Families are urging policymakers to fund early-intervention services, which research shows can improve outcomes for children with cerebral palsy.
