Supreme Court to hear plea against voter-roll revision

New Delhi, October 6: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear legal arguments seeking its intervention in the Election Commission's controversial voter-roll revision.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant issued notices to the government and the poll body. It sought official records and explanations before deciding how to proceed.

The petitions alleged that key decisions during the Special Intensive Revision were taken without the required participation of the other two election commissioners. The petitioners also seek a probe into the commission's functioning.

"If there are decisions against the law, we will take care of it," the court said at the hearing. It declined to suspend Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar immediately.

The row deepened after reports that the commission modified Form 6, used for voter registration. The opposition alleges the poll body falsely claimed the changes followed Supreme Court orders.

The court said it would annul any Election Commission orders not in keeping with the law. The next hearing date is yet to be fixed.
