Air India, Express may share key teams in cost-cutting push

New Delhi, October 6: The Air India Group is considering integrating key functions such as HR, finance, IT and engineering across Air India and Air India Express.
Under the proposed structure, each department would serve both airlines through a common team. The move aims to reduce duplication and unlock economies of scale. Both carriers would keep their separate brands and business models.
The discussions come amid heavy losses. For FY26, the group reported combined losses of Rs 22,238 crore on revenue of about Rs 71,870 crore. Air India posted a standalone net loss of Rs 15,368 crore. Air India Express lost Rs 6,767 crore.
CEO and MD Tewolde Gebremariam called for greater integration in his first townhall address. He said the airlines already belonged to one Air India Group and that sustainable profitability was a key goal.
The plan is at an early stage. It would need formal approval from Air India's supervisory board before implementation.
