12-Year-Old Donates 30,000 Diapers to Families

Twelve-year-old Sloan of Phoenix, Arizona, has delivered 30,000 diapers to families in need through her fifth annual diaper drive. A U-Haul packed floor to ceiling arrived at Nourish Phoenix, one of the largest diaper donations the food bank has ever received.
Sloan started at age seven, after a visit to Nourish Phoenix with her mother. She noticed an empty shelf and learned it was meant for diapers, one of the most requested items, because they are expensive and constantly in demand. On the way home she told her mother they should bring diapers back.
Her first drive collected about 7,000 diapers. Five years later, the tradition has grown into a community-wide effort. This year she aimed for 22,500 diapers but the donations kept coming until there was barely room to walk around her home.
The need is acute because, unlike food, diapers are not covered by US government assistance programmes. Nourish Phoenix says diapers are among the most requested items from visiting families.
