Bangladesh floods kill 51, affect over a million: ministry

Bangladesh’s floods have killed 51 people and injured 39, affecting more than 1.02 million people across 20 districts, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief said.
The ministry reported that 1,022,963 people are affected. Cox’s Bazar is the worst-hit district, with 28 deaths recorded there. Officials said 1,131 flood shelters have been opened, sheltering 44,457 people.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has placed the administration on maximum alert and directed officials to speed up rescue and relief work. Relief teams are distributing food, clean water and medicine in the worst-hit areas.
The floods have damaged homes, crops and roads, with water levels rising in several river systems after days of heavy rain. Authorities fear the toll could rise as more reports come in from remote areas.
Bangladesh is hit by floods almost every year during the monsoon season. The government says early warning systems and shelters have been expanded to reduce casualties.
