India beat Malaysia 5-1 to retain Asian Games hockey gold

India's men's hockey team defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the final on Saturday to successfully defend its Asian Games title at Aichi-Nagoya.
The win marked India's fifth men's hockey gold at the Asian Games after victories in 1966, 1998, 2014 and the previous edition. It was the first time any nation successfully defended the men's hockey title at the Games.
India took the lead in the 12th minute through a Harmanpreet Singh dragflick from a penalty corner. Malaysia equalised through Shello Silverius in the 14th minute before Jugraj Singh restored India's lead in the 23rd minute with another penalty corner conversion.
Hardik Singh made it 3-1 in the 43rd minute from a penalty stroke. Shilanand Lakra finished from close range in the 55th minute after a fine effort from Abhishek, and Harmanpreet completed the scoring in the 57th minute with another superb dragflick.
The victory also marked a historic first: the Indian men's and women's hockey teams won gold at the same edition of the Asian Games. The women's team defeated China 1-0 in the final, with Lalremsiami scoring in the 10th minute for India's first women's hockey gold since 1982.
With these wins, both Indian teams qualified for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
