Drones Hit Yandex Data Centre in First Major Strike on Hub

Drones have hit a major data centre owned by Yandex in Russia’s Ryazan region, the company said on Thursday, in the first confirmed major attack on a Russian data hub.
The strike caused a fire and forced the company to fully suspend the centre’s operations. Yandex said it was dealing with the consequences and restoring affected services.
The company said its core consumer services were not affected. Yandex runs YandexGPT, one of Russia’s leading generative AI models.
On its Yandex Cloud website, the company reported power supply problems in one data centre zone and advised customers to use other zones.
The attack followed a wave of Russian strikes on Ukrainian data centres in recent weeks. Russian drones destroyed data centres in Kyiv on September 23 and 24, leaving about 100,000 households offline.
The strike was first reported by Reuters on October 8. It marks an escalation in attacks on digital infrastructure on both sides of the war.
