US Sanctions International Criminal Court After Nobel Win

The Trump administration imposed fresh financial sanctions on the International Criminal Court on Friday, just hours after one of its former judges won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said President Donald Trump "will never allow the International Criminal Court to prosecute Americans." He added that the United States would "ban transactions with this rogue court, cutting off their resources and crippling its ability to operate."

The timing raised questions about whether Washington was retaliating after the Nobel Committee honored Navanethem "Navi" Pillay. She served as an ICC Appeals Chamber judge from 2003 to 2008 and won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her work in international criminal justice.

The administration has long been hostile to the court. It previously sanctioned ICC prosecutors and judges over an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and an investigation into American soldiers in Afghanistan.

The court, founded in 2002 and based in The Hague, counts 125 member states, including every EU country and all NATO members except the United States and Turkey. Washington expects allies to rein in the court.
