US Marine, 20, arrested in Japan over woman’s death at hotel

A 20-year-old US Marine was arrested in Japan on suspicion of killing a woman and stealing her belongings at a hotel in Okinawa, the New York Post reported on Sunday. Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballad, assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, remains in custody.
Police allege Ballad killed Anna Yagi, 39, in the early hours of Saturday at the Naminoue Crystal Hotel. Japanese police told Stars and Stripes the incident happened between 2:10 a.m. and 4:17 a.m. Police say security footage shows him entering the hotel with the woman and leaving alone.
A hotel employee found the victim unconscious after the pair failed to check out on time. Police allege Ballad stole the woman’s wallet and backpack. He denies the allegations, police said.
Ballad was detained after being spotted walking in an Okinawa nightlife district, according to Nikkei Asia. Police expect to refer the case to the Naha Public Prosecutors Office within 48 hours of his arrest.
The US Marine Corps said it is cooperating with Japanese authorities. US Ambassador George Glass said on X that he had spoken with Japan’s foreign ministry and pledged full cooperation as the investigation continues.
