Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Wednesday that Britain should consider options for its future relationship with the European Union, including ultimately rejoining the bloc. Speaking to the BBC after telling Labour’s annual conference that Brexit had “done more harm than good”, Burnham listed staying as-is, a customs union, the single market or full rejoining as options to be assessed on what was “doable”. Earlier on Tuesday, Burnham said he would use a November UK-EU summit to outline options for Britain’s long-term relationship with Europe. Burnham replaced Keir Starmer as prime minister in July. His remarks mark the first time since the 2016 referendum that a British prime minister has openly raised rejoining. Britain voted to leave the EU in 2016, ending more than four decades of membership. Burnham insisted the government would stick to its manifesto commitments on the EU for this parliament, with the next election due in 2029.
