UK aide secretly visited Israel over consulate closure row

Britain’s national security adviser quietly visited Israel last week to stop the closure of the UK consulate in East Jerusalem, according to three sources quoted by Reuters.
National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell held talks with Israeli officials, but the two sides failed to reach an agreement. Britain’s government has not disclosed the visit.
Israel ordered Britain to close the East Jerusalem consulate within 30 days on September 8. The order followed London’s decision to ban goods made in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. France and Canada joined the sanctions, but Israel has not acted against them.
The 30-day deadline runs out on Thursday. A spokesperson for Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar told Reuters the consulate will close as announced. A UK government spokesperson had no comment.
Britain said Israel’s actions are undermining the two-state solution. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government openly rejects Palestinian statehood. The standoff highlights growing frustration among Israel’s longtime allies over West Bank settlements.
