DOJ Asks Judge To Reinstate White House Ban On CNN, MS NOW, Politico
The US Justice Department has asked a federal judge to reinstate President Donald Trump’s ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico journalists accessing the White House.
The department argues that access to the White House is a privilege, not a constitutional right.
Trump announced the ban on Truth Social on September 18. He accused the three outlets of reporting fake news and said more outlets could follow.
The outlets sued, saying the ban violated their First Amendment rights.
US District Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, temporarily blocked the decision on September 24. He said the reporters were not given notice or a chance to defend themselves before losing access.
The judge restored their press credentials for 14 days.
The three outlets are now asking for a longer-term court order to keep their access until a final decision is made.
The Justice Department says the outlets failed to meet basic standards of professionalism and decorum, including by publishing sensitive information.
