Trump rules out ban on US diesel exports

US President Donald Trump has ruled out a ban on American diesel exports, ending weeks of uncertainty over whether Washington would restrict overseas fuel shipments.

Trump made the statement on October 2, hours after the G7 nations agreed to release 100 million barrels of oil and diesel from emergency reserves. He announced the decision on social media.

The reversal matters. Just days earlier, Trump had said he was weighing export curbs as diesel prices climbed to record highs. The national average hit $6.52 a gallon on September 22, the highest ever, before easing to $6.37.

Under the G7 plan, members will release 100 million barrels over four months through coordination by the International Energy Agency. A “substantial” amount of diesel will go out in the first 20 days.

Trump faces pressure to bring down fuel costs before the November 3 midterm elections. His approval ratings on the economy have hit a new low in AP-NORC polling, with the eight-month Iran war and trade battles pushing up prices.

Europe has agreed to release heavily stocked diesel immediately, Trump wrote on Truth Social, saying “the process will begin immediately.”
