Trump mistakes Brazil vote for ‘India’s presidential election’

US President Donald Trump appeared to confuse Brazil with India in a social media post on Sunday, claiming that 125 million people had voted in the first round of India’s presidential election. In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that the results came out shortly after the vote closed on the same day. He contrasted this with voting in American cities such as Detroit and Philadelphia, where he claimed results take weeks to calculate, calling voting in America corrupt. However, India did not hold a presidential election on Sunday. India’s president is chosen indirectly by an electoral college, not through a direct nationwide popular vote. The post came shortly after Brazil held the first round of its presidential election. Right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro finished ahead of incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva but neither crossed 50 per cent, setting up an October 25 runoff. The 125 million figure cited by Trump is close to Brazil’s total valid votes. Trump later corrected the post, according to reports.
